**Why Am I Donating One Dollar From Every Book Sale To Charity?
In the book I tell the story about the early part of my senior gap year when I was in a remote part of Australia. I witnessed truck loads of surplus good quality bed linen from mining camps being dumped. Fortunately that kick-started a huge project where surplus linen was instead distributed to a whole range of needy charities. I had witnessed this disgraceful side of waste. I wanted to see the other side of this. The positive human impact on the people who received it. One of those charities was in Thailand…. more
From the Author….
I must have come up with a hundred reasons why not to take this gap year …certainly not a senior gap year. To give up our home in Perth, sell the furniture, sell the car. What, giving all this up, the Mr Logic I’m here to protect you voice inside kept going on. To take off for twelve months, backpacking? The other side of the world? Isn’t it dangerous? Surely, you’re too old? And what, travelling solo? And so it went on. But thankfully the gut feeling won.
My Senior Gap Year, the book. It’s the story about the journey. From challenging the comfort zone, to the many humorous attempts to communicate with people who didn’t speak a word of English. Backpacking from one country to another. Experiencing every form of transport from a horse and cart to a five-star coach. From sleeping on the floor of a Buddhist temple to a mat in the middle of a jungle.
How experiences with people along the way, issues like drugs, waste, terrorism have changed my views. I left with no purpose, other than to step out the door, travel and explore. But then how an opportunity discovered in the middle of the desert, has since benefited charities worth around a quarter million dollars. And that was just the beginning of the journey.
I look forward to sharing the journey and experiences with you through the book.
Chris Herrmann
